Journey through the Abstract – Art by Tamlyn Che’ Mthethwa

The great Polish-American noveslit Jerzy Kosinski is quoted for saying these famous words, “The principle of art is to pause, not bypass. The principles of true art is not to portray, but to evoke.”

In this article on the Bellwether, we are delighted to announce the Winter Group Show exhibition, which will feature and celebrate talented local artists. It is a great opportunity to pause and journey into the emotive world of art.

We had an exclusive sneak with one of the participants, Tamlyn Che’ Mthethwa (tamche_art). She is a passionate, self-taught artist whose work mostly leans towards creating abstract and post-impressionist styled pieces. However, she has tried varied styles and looks forward to what this journey will bring. Here are some of her pieces with her own citations.

1.’iNkwindlambali’ (Zulu for ‘ Autumn flower’)

“This painting illustrates the beauty of Autumn through a floral abstract. I am gradually finding ways to embrace my husband’s (Sandile Mthethwa) culture and language. One new way is naming some  paintings in Zulu.”

2.’ Fortitude’

Meaning: The strength of mind that enables a person to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage.

“This piece can evoke different emotions. For me, it personally illustrates a journey of trust and strength in Jesus Christ in the middle of hardship. Romans 5 has assisted me to fight many battles of turmoil, with enduring spiritual joy and rest as a result.”

3.’ The Clearing’

“There is such beauty in clear and calm sunset skies. There is splendor in the sign that a new beginning is soon approaching.”

4. ‘Indigenous kaleidoscope’

“I feel incredibly blessed to live in South Africa, regardless of its challenges. I love the vibrant colours in the indigenous landscape and this appreciation bursts out in this painting.”
